Weekly Beer Reviews

Falls City

This is a local favorite that has graced our wall more often than not since we have been open. Using the 1930's recipe, a local entrepreneur has brought back this brand to great success. It finally gets its day as our featured beer for Pint Night. Vanilla and cornflakes are prominent on the nose. Crisp up front with a light bitterness, that quickly transforms to flavors of cornflakes and tea. The finish sweetens a big, but remains smooth throughout. This is a refreshing beer that is perfect for these hot summer days.

Mike and Tyler's Rating - 7.25/10

Rogue Chocolate Stout

This is one of my favorite chocolate stouts that we get on tap. It hasn't been seen on tap in nearly 2 years, and I am happy to welcome it back. The nose is diverse, with hints of roasted coffee, milk chocolate, and cocoa powder. The taste is a little bitter up front, with hints of dark chocolate and black coffee. It finishes with a pleasant taste of unsweetened cocoa powder. This is not the sweet bomb like Southern Tier, and I find it to be the perfect Chocolate Stout for your favorite red meat.

Mike and Tyler's Rating - 8.75/10

Schlafly AIPA

Hands down, this is my favorite Schlafly. It is the perfect IPA for Summer due to how refreshing it is. The nose is diverse and full of hops. Earthy and herbal with bits of pine and sweet grapefruit. This beer has an amazing aroma. The taste is slightly bitter, with grapefruit and bits of black pepper. The finish is wonderfully refreshing with hints of pine. Tyler claimed to taste chicken skin, but I got no such flavor. Judge for yourselves folks.

Mike and Tyler's Rating - 9.25/10

Southern Tier Creme Brulee

This is one of the most fragrant beers that has ever graced our wall. I can usually smell it from 10 - 15 feet away. The nose is chock full of toffee, french vanilla, and caramel. It just smells rich. The taste is no different. It lives up to its name, tasting dead up like creme brulee, with strong hints of vanilla and alcohol. The finish has more of that creamy flavor, with a slight bit of alcohol as well. Honestly, I don't like this years batch as well as last years. However, it is still a great beer for those of you into Sweet Stouts.

Mike and Tyler's Rating - 7.5/10

Weekly Beer Reviews

Boulder Sweaty Betty

Another Summer Blonde Ale on tap. This year has certainly been a Belgian lovers dream! This beer has loads of yeast aroma's on the nose, with hints of coriander and french bread. Light hints of lemon mix wonderfully with the yeast aroma's. The taste was smooth, with slight hints of sourness and a taste of toast. The finish was quick, with bits of clove and a wonderfully refreshing feel. Overall, not an incredible amount of flavor, but it is perfect for Summer.

Mike and Tyler's Rating - 6.75/10

Shiner Wild Hare Pale Ale

Another sessionable Shiner on tap. That has not been a good thing recently, and this is no exception. The smell is light, with floral aroma's and bits of bananas. The taste is light with a hint of bitterness and a taste of corn. It finishes with a bitter mineral finish. This beer has more in common with a Miller Lite than the craft Pale Ale's that usually grace our wall. It is refreshing, and extremely affordable. However, if you are looking for the best of the best, you can find better options on our wall.

Mike and Tyler's Rating - 3.5/10

Heavy Seas Collaboration Land Ho

Heavy Seas worked with the Devils Backbone Brewery to present this Black Pilsner to our wall. The smell was light, though had subtle hints of smoke, coffee, and toast. The taste was light, though filled with a decent amount of flavor. Smoke and bitter pine were shown off, with those herbal Pilsner hops shining through. The taste had bits of charcoal on it, though it wasn't overly bitter. A great option for those looking for a dark summer beer.

Mike and Tyler's Rating - 7.0/10

Sierra Nevada Hoptimum

This is a very popular Imperial IPA on our wall. The smell was soapy, with bits of what Tyler and I described as "dirty washrag". The aroma was certainly unpleasant, though the taste was not. One of the most intense bitter bombs we have had on tap, the age on these kegs has toned down the aroma and flavoring hops leaving a resin-like flavor. The bitterness continues throughout, with flavors of alcohol and pine on the finish. A wonderful option for bitter lovers.

Pint Night News

So the last Pint Night was a huge success! Even without putting it on the blog, it was the biggest Pint Night yet. Three Floyds was the beer of choice, and we had quite the lineup with Alpha King, Dreadnaught, Blackheart, Arctic Panzer Wolf, Apocalypse Cow, and the creme de la creme...Zombie Dust! This weeks Pint Night can't outdo that, but it sure is a good one. Sierra Nevada is the brewery of the week, and we will be offering their Ovila Golden Ale, Southern Hemisphere Harvest Ale, and Hoptimum Imperial IPA on tap. Glasses will be $3 and the fills will be $3 - $4. Hope to see you there!

Weekly Beer Reviews

Brooklyn Summer Ale

These breweries sure come up with some creative names for their Summer Ale's, no? The nose is faint, with small hints of herbs, banana's, and caramel. The taste is slightly bitter up front, showing a rare hop presence in Summer Ales. The light taste of toast becomes a light flavor of celery that quickly fades. This is a great beer for those looking for a little something different in a Summer Ale.

Mike and Tyler's Rating - 7/10

Southern Tier IPA

The hops have died a bit in this keg of Southern Tier's IPA. It has a few months of age, and that has definitely contributed to its faded nose. Light hints of clove, rosemary, and alcohol can be picked up. Fairly bitter up front, the taste turns to sage and garlic before transforming into earthy tones with light flavors of onion. The flavors are wonderful, but they are unfortunately short due to the intense bitterness.

Mike and Tyler's Rating - 7/10

BBC Kashmir Godzilla IPA

No, this isn't a typo! We have a BBC beer on tap! It has been hard to get our hands on some since the big switch with their Master Brewers. This one sure doesn't disappoint. The nose is truly impressive, with aromas of peaches, apricots, papaya, and herbs. The flavor is fairly bitter, though peaches and lemons are quite evident in the taste. The finish is quick, with the bitterness and peach flavors lingering just for a few seconds. BBC seems to have gotten this one right.

Growler Wall Update

Greetings Liquor Barn Growler Customers! You will probably notice over the next 5 days that some of our taps will be empty, decreasing your choices. Weekly Beer Reviews

North Coast Pranqster Golden Ale

This easy drinking beer is of the same style as Duvel. It exhibits many of the same characteristics, which is not a bad thing. The nose has hints of lemon zest, clove, and grapes. The taste is pleasantly bitter up front, with floral and spice notes. The finish is amazingly smooth for a 7.6% ABV beer, with light hints of biscuits and alcohol. Overall, this beer is perfect for those hot summer days. Tyler was not a fan, but I was.

Mike and Tyler's Rating - 7.75/10

North Coast Brother Thelonious

This Belgian-style Abbey Ale has quite the nose on it. Many different aromas assaulted our noses. Brown sugar, cocoa beans, plums, and apricots were all prominent and showed off a remarkable bouquet. The taste is rich, with brown sugar, burnt caramel, and light hints of grapefruit. The alcohol could be tasted within this beer, though the finish was smooth with hints of maple and caramel. This beer is rich and sweet, but certainly packed full of flavor.

Mike and Tyler's Rating - 8.0/10

North Coast Old Stock Ale

This one is interesting. Some age probably would have been perfect for this beer, though it is good now. It has a whopping 11.9% ABV that isn't very noticeable. You smell a bit of the alcohol on the nose, but other scents like lemon, maple, and toffee are more prevalent. The taste is strong, with sweet tastes of cream, brown sugar, and toffee. Light hints of cherries rang in the finish, which had hints of coffee and a slight bitterness.

Mike and Tyler's Rating - 7.25/10

North Coast Old Rasputin

This one is very popular among Russian Imperial Stout lovers. The nose is all coffee and cream, with very light notes of smoke. The taste is bitter and slightly flat, with light hints of black coffee and dark chocolate. The finish continued the bitter taste and the black coffee. This batch seemed uninteresting and overly bitter. This might be some peoples cup of tea, but it certainly was not ours.

Mike and Tyler's Rating - 5.75/10
