Weekly Beer Reviews

Three Floyds Pride and Joy APA

Pride and Joy is a good beer. There is nothing wrong with it. Though it has the absolute bad luck of having Man O Awe, Alpha King, and Zombie Dust in the same APA family. That is like having Tom Brady, Brad Pitt, and Mick Jagger as your brothers and you just run a small division at AT&T. You just get overshadowed. The nose starts out unspectacular with hints of oranges and floral notes. The smell is light, but pleasant enough. The taste starts off slightly bitter with strong flavors of pine and perfume. Lighter flavors of garlic and lavender round out the opening. The finish lightens up with only soft hints of oranges and toasted crackers. It is perfect for warm weather and the $7.99 price keeps it affordable.

Mike and Tyler's Rating - 7.75/10

Dark Horse Sapient Trip Tripel

It has been a while since a Tripel of any kind has graced our wall. I have had the pleasure of this beers company before, so I was eager to try it fresh off the wall. The nose is immediately sweet and brought about aromas of bubblegum, peeps, juicy fruit, circus peanuts, and mint. It was like an explosion of candy on the nose. The taste contains strong flavors of bananas, pine, clove, and necco candy right off the bat. Orange pith rounds out the front and the beginning of the finish. That finish starts off bitter with the orange pith, then moves to a creamy flavor with hints of grapes. This is sure to appeal to every Belgian beer enthusiast.

Mike and Tyler's Rating - 8.75/10

Sierra Nevada Harvest Single Hop IPA (Yakima Hops)

Sierra Nevada's Harvest Series always tends to pump out solid beers. Still, one begins to wonder how hoppy a single-hopped IPA can be? The answer for this one leans towards "very". The nose is immediately herbal off the front with strong hints of onion and dirt. Lighter aromas of garlic and lime shine through as the nose lingers. It is quite flavorful from the moment it hits your tongue. Green tea, lemon, and ash with herbal notes hits your tongue from the start. The tea flavor lingers even as the beer gets more bitter on the finish. Hints of elderberries, pine resin, and onions finished off this beer nicely.

Mike and Tyler's Rating - 8.5/10

Dark Horse Crooked Tree IPA

We start out with the Single IPA from Dark Horse. The nose is quite pungent with hints of tea, tobacco leaf, green apples, peaches, and parsley. The nose definitely makes you prepare those taste buds for a transcendent travel through beer heaven. Then reality hits and you discover bitter lemons and nothing else. I am serious, just lemons.  At least until the finish starts. More lemon (what a shock), perfume, toast, and hints of grass rounded out this unspectacular IPA. Tyler and I differed greatly on this beer. I was not the slightest bit impressed, whereas Tyler enjoyed this beer. Let us know what you think.

Mike and Tyler's Rating - 7.25/10

Dark Horse Double Crooked Tree Imperial IPA

Last but certainly not least is Dark Horse Double Crooked Tree Imperial IPA. The nose is slightly sweet with aromas of mango, honey, pineapple, and pine resin. It has quite the lovely nose, but I was fooled by the previous Dark Horse beer and went into the flavor cautiously. Sweet deliciousness assaulted our tastebuds from the start. Pineapple, honey, melon, and onion started out this beer with light flavors of hairspray and deodorant to follow. The finish is bitter with a woody flavor starting it off. Pine resin and cough syrup rounded out this impressive Imperial IPA. It was even harder to believe that it was 12% Alcohol.

Mike and Tyler's Rating - 9.25/10

Dark Horse Pint Night

Tyler finds himself shoulder deep in wine which leaves me to make the Pint Night post. I am sure everyone already noticed something had changed without Tyler's enthusiastic blog title. So I will just go ahead and throw the information your way. Dark Horse is the featured brewery, though we have a couple other offerings that are sure to pique your interest. Here is our lineup:

Dark Horse Sapient Trip Tripel
Dark Horse Crooked Tree IPA
Dark Horse Double Crooked Tree Imperial IPA
Sierra Nevada Harvest Single Hop IPA (Yakima Hops)
Three Floyds Pride and Joy APA

Not a bad lineup, huh? It pretty much gears itself towards the hop heads out there with a Belgian Tripel thrown in just to shake things up. Look for reviews to follow, and we will look for you all up at The Wall. Auf wiedersehen!
