Weekly Beer Reviews Pt. 1

Dogfish Head Festina Peche

As the name implies, this beer is Dogfish Head's peach beer. The style is of the Berliner Weisse, which is usually very wheaty and very sour. This one hits the nail on the head. The nose is heavy on the heavy syrup canned peaches. It almost brought me back to sitting on a porch in Georgia...Nevermind. Wheat and sour apples also showed on the nose. The taste is tart up front, with overpowering tastes of young peaches. The finish was light, with that wheat shining through with softer hints of cracked black pepper. If you are looking for a flavorful wheat, look no further.

Dogfish Head Punkin'

As Fall rolls closer, more Pumpkin Ales seem to be released. Dogfish Head's is always highly anticipated. However, this years is not up to last years standards. The nose had tons of Pumpkin Spice. Tyler smelled brisket and pickles as well. The taste is light, with pumpkin spice up front, hints of smoke, and a little fruit towards the finish. Speaking of the finish, it had an overpowering flavor of cloves and wheat. A pleasant bitterness accompanied it. It isn't bad, but if you are looking for a Pumpkin Ale, this one is light on the pumpkin taste.

Dogfish Head My Antonia Imperial Pilsner

Imperial Pilsners usually tend to be hit or miss. It is hard to combine loads of flavor into a beer that is built to be sessionable. The nose on this one is interesting. Lemon combines with brown sugar and wheat bread. It makes for a very pleasant nose. The taste is not as pleasant. Overly bitter, it has unpleasant flavors of stale beer and burnt sugar. Grapefruit chimes in a bit, but it isn't enough to overpower the others. The finish is all bitter, with little else to save this one.

Dogfish Raison D'Etre

I will admit that I am not the biggest fan of Belgian Strong Dark Ales. However, I went into this one with that in mind and it still was just...not good. The nose is sweet, with hints of caramel, raisins, fig, and brown sugar. The taste is sweet and tart at the same time, with flavors of raisins and brown sugar. The finish was pleasant with malty flavors of bran and cocoa. The finish was good, but still not enough to save this beer.

Mike, Tyler, and Cody's Rating - 4.5/10

Stone 16th Anniversary IPA

This Special Release IPA from Stone had one heck of a pungent nose, let me tell you. My nose was assaulted by herbs, lemon, floral hops, and a hint of soap. It was enough to almost overwhelm my nose. The taste is highly floral, with flavors of lemon, basil, and slight hints of fruit punch. The finish would banish all those flavors but the lemon, with the bitterness ramping up. It is an exceptional IPA, and packs a whopping 10% ABV. Definitely check this one out.

Mike, Tyler, and Cody's Rating - 9.25/10
