Weekly Beer Reviews

Bell's Smitten Golden Rye Ale

This new release from Bell's combines the thick rye flavor of a Rye Ale along with the smooth and spicy flavor of a Golden Ale. Onion, soap, rye, and pringles were present in the aroma. The nose was shockingly light for such pungent aroma's. The flavor was crisp up front with heavy flavors of rye and citrus with softer sour flavors and floral notes also shining through. The finish was dry and bitter with pleasant flavors of orange, cornpops, and mint. This is perfect for the warmer days ahead.

Dogfish Head Hellhound On My Ale Imperial IPA

This brew from Dogfish Head is brewed with lemon peel and lemon pith which leads to this huge citrus bomb of an Imperial IPA. The nose is quite diverse with aromas of citrus, soap, pine, and mild cheddar. The flavor is crisp with heavy earth notes. Lighter flavors of citrus, perfume, lemon oil, and alcohol are also present. The finish is quick with a bitter and tangy finish. Softer citrus flavors are present, though the bitterness does overpower a bit. I believe this is much better than last years edition.

Bell's HopSlam

People wait for this beer every year. I probably get asked every month about this highly sought after beer. Well, the time has come and it is on tap! The nose is beautiful on this Double IPA, with strong hints of onion, pine, grapefruit, mango, pineapple, and black cherry. The nose is amazing and truly worth the name of HopSlam. However, that is where it ends. The flavor is slightly bland and watered down. A burst of lemon is followed by light hints of pine and honey. The finish is even softer with strong hints of incense and more subtle flavors of orange zest, pine, and alcohol. This is still a wonderful Imperial IPA, but still the weakest release out of the last 4 years.

Mike and Tyler's Rating - 8.75/10
